Heating cost subsidy also for students
Instead of €115, BAföG recipients will now receive a heating subsidy of €230.
All students who received BAföG benefits for at least one month in the period from October 2021 to March 2022 and lived outside their parents' home will receive the allowance.
Furthermore, there is no need to submit an application. The amount will be automatically transferred to all eligible persons' own accounts. This is expected to take place in the summer, when heating cost or ancillary cost statements are usually due.

NEWS from 01.03.2022
On Wednesday, the federal government decided to provide a subsidy for heating costs for low-income households for the summer due to skyrocketing heating oil and gas prices. This is because the additional payments for utilities are expected to be particularly high this year.
BAföG recipients and also recipients of housing benefit can receive the lump sum. Housing benefit recipients receive €135 if they live alone, €175 for a two-person household, and another €35 for each additional person in the household. Students, trainees and other eligible persons receive a lump sum of €115. BAföG recipients must apply for the lump sum separately. All others receive it automatically.
But who exactly gets the allowance? And how should the allowance be paid out? What needs to be considered? When and where can I apply? What requirements must be met for payment?
The Federal Ministry of Education and Research will answer these and many other questions relating to the cabinet decision of February 2, 2022.
The heating cost allowance has now initially been approved by the Federal Cabinet. However, the law will not come into force until it is passed in this way by the Bundestag. This is expected to happen on June 1, 2022.
As soon as the applications can be submitted, we will inform you here accordingly.
