Dear Studis,

Going to university for the first time, there is a lot to think of that you probably never had to consider before. To help you get started in your new student life, you will find a checklist for a successful start to your studies here:

Top up your student ID card for the canteen (You can find the terminals in the canteen)

In our canteens you can pay with cash or your student ID card. To top up your ID card you can tap your card to the terminals that are located in all our canteens and top it up with cash. This way you don't have to search your pockets for money every time you want to have a meal, but just tap your card to pay for it. If you need help, feel free to consult our canteen staff.

Download your Deutschlandsemesterticket to your mobile phone

Included in your semester fee is the “Deutschlandticket” (at a discount), with which you can use all of the regional public transport in Germany as well as selected long-distance routes. The ticket is valid only digitally and has to be downloaded. You can find the specific instructions here:

Register for the license fee (GEZ)

In Germany, regardless of whether you have a TV, Radio, etc., a broadcasting license fee has to be paid per apartment. The fee is 18,36 Euros a month and is normally billed quarterly. If you receive BAföG, you can be exempted from the license fee.

Apply for BAföG

If you can't finance your studies yourself or with your parent's help, you can apply for BAföG. The amount of your BAföG contribution is determined by several factors, like your assets, and can only be finally calculated after your application. You can submit your application online. If you have questions about the application or are unsure about what information to provide, our financial advisers are happy to help.

Get your Coffee-to-Go-Cup from us (voucher in the university's first-year bags)

In the university's first year bags, which are handed out by the universities or the student council, we've added a reusable water bottle, including a voucher for a coffee-to-go-cup. Follow us on Instagram, show us your voucher and get your free cup in one of our info points!

You didn't get a first-year bag? The WHZ is handing them out on the 09.10. and the TUC on the 22.10. at the immatriculation ceremony.

Register your apartment with the registration office in your place of residence (within 2 weeks of moving in)

When you are moving into a new apartment you are legally required to register with the registration office within 2 weeks. Just book an appointment with your local registration office.

We wish you a good start and successful studies!
