I’m already a student; how do I get a room in a hall of residence? Simply contact the Accommodation Management Department in Chemnitz or Zwickau to enquire about vacant rooms for the date you wish to move in.

I’m a student at another German university; can I get a room in Chemnitz or Zwickau for the duration of my internship here? Generally speaking, yes! Please contact staff at the Accommodation Department for information regarding rooms available at the time of your placement. Room costs may be different from student prices, however.

Am I allowed to sublet my room while I’m away on a placement? If so, what do I need to consider? Subletting is only permitted with authorisation from the lessor. Please contact your adviser to see if this is possible.

Do I also have to register with the city authorities? Yes. Anyone moving into a flat or a room in Chemnitz, Zwickau or Schneeberg must register in person with the city authorities within two weeks. Detailed information about registering, registering a change of address and de-registering, along with information about the required documentation and the relevant authorities, is available from the Chemnitz, Zwickau and Schneeberg homepages.

Do I also have to register a change of address and/or de-register with the authorities? Even if you move to different accommodation in the city, you must still inform the authorities immediately (Federal Registration Act, Section 17). I want to move to a different hall of residence. When is the best time to move? When will I have the biggest choice of accommodation? Spring (January to March) and summer (June to August) give you the widest choice of accommodation to compare by price, furniture, features and even neighbours. Please ask advisers at the Accommodation Department about available rooms at your preferred hall of residence. You can also complete an application to move here.

How much notice do I need to give if I want to vacate my room? Chemnitz-Zwickau Student Union rooms are subject to a two-month notice period. You need to give notice by the third working day of the month; the contract will then come to an end on the last day of the following month. In exceptional cases (e.g. de-registration), it may be possible to terminate the contract earlier; please talk to your adviser about this.

When and how do I get my deposit back? According to the rental contract, if the room and key have been handed back in good order, deposits will be returned to the account specified by individual tenants within three months. As a rule, this takes place at the end of the second month after you have moved out.

When and how do I get my deposit back if I am a foreign student? For students who will be returning to their native countries and closing their German bank accounts, the deposit will be transferred to their home account (in Europe). In individual cases, it may be possible to return your deposit in cash when you leave; please talk to your adviser about this.

Why do I have to submit my enrolment certificate each semester? Your enrolment certificate entitles you to rent a student room. Otherwise you would have to pay “Gästemiete” (visitors’ rent). You're aible to upload the document. Please note our instruction.

Do I have to pay a broadcasting licence fee for my devices in my hall of residence, or is this included in the rent? Rent does not include licence fees for devices, which must be paid by individual tenants. Since January 2013, a broadcasting licence fee has been payable by each flat. It is therefore not relevant which specific devices (TV, radio, etc.) are in, or used in, the household. The fee is €17.50 per month, and is usually paid quarterly. This means that each household must pay €52.50 every quarter. Further information.

I need confirmation of rental costs for my BaföG funding application. The rental cost certificate is available from the Student Finance Department where specialist Accommodation Department staff will be pleased to validate it. Alternatively, you can submit a copy of the rental contract along with your BAföG application.

The tenant information required for your housing benefit application is available from the adviser responsible for your hall of residence, who will be happy to help you.

My neighbour is too loud; what can I do? If noise becomes a nuisance at night, the first thing we always advise is to talk to your neighbour in person. If there is no improvement in the situation, please do let your adviser know. The Chemnitz halls of residence also have a security service that you can call; of course, you can also call the police if the situation warrants it.

Something in my room is broken; what should I do? Please inform your building manager in person, by phone, or by completing a damage report form. You will find this in your building manager’s office, or here. Place it in their letterbox and they will deal with the matter as soon as possible.

It’s the weekend and there’s a serious problem in my room: a power failure, a burst pipe, etc.. What now? If you encounter problems and your building manager is not available, you will find a list of emergency and accident numbers in their office.
